Who is Markham at the Movies?
Since 2010, Markham at the Movies, a non-profit group, has been bringing award-winning Toronto International Film Festival movies to Markham, allowing audiences to become part of Canada's largest film club, close to home.
Run by volunteer film enthusiasts, film selections are curated to entertain, enlighten and sometimes challenge audiences. You will enjoy films not typically screened at mainstream theatres.
What sets Markham at the Movies apart is the film experience and social community generated: friendly welcomes, meeting up with friends and making new ones, film-themed guest artists and speakers, and learning about the artistic merits of film ... without the hassle and expense of travel downtown.
Attendees call it one of the "best kept secrets" for a local night out full of engaging and thought-provoking entertainment.
Additionally, as a satellite committee of the Markham Arts Council (MAC), throughout the year and the film season, we promote partnerships to encourage, support and grow film, community arts and civic groups in our community.

Our History
Our beginnings were humble. An "Are you interested in films?" flyer in 2009 has grown into a mission "to entertain and enlighten Markham audiences by bringing award-winning Canadian and International films to Markham".
Just seven months after those flyers went out, the first show, Metropolis, premiered with red carpet and tuxedos at Markham Theatre. Audiences of just 36 people sat bistro-style in the backroom of the theatre for the first season. But film enthusiasts, arts lovers and film critics kept coming and audiences kept growing.
Now many seasons later, Markham at the Movies presents films on the main stage of the Flato Markham Theatre with audiences having grown to full-house capacities.
For over 12 seasons now, we've been providing a season of films and creating experiences to inspire film lovers.
Check out our video compilation of all the films from our first 10 years!

At each film night, we proudly display this award received from the City of Markham. This sculpture was designed especially for Markham at the Movies by Cathy Mark. In the front, young, smaller and impressionable fiddleheads represent the audience attending the films and how the experience of watching film can inspire and affect lives. In the background, full-grown fern leaves represent the films themselves and Markham at the Movies for bringing them to the community. Check out our community partners that we are pleased to call friends. |
